God the Son: the Lord Jesus Christ

  1. THE SON OF GOD IS UNIQUE

    1. Claims of Jesus

      • Divine origin, knowledge, and fellowship. John 16:28, Matthew 11:27

      • Able to reveal the Father in and through Himself.

        John 14:9-11 In Jewish culture this was a claim to deity, as the son

        is equal to the father

      • Divine qualities:

        1. Omnipresence Matthew 18:20

        2. Power to raise the dead John 5:21

        3. Power to forgive sins Mark 2:5-10

        4. Power to judge man John 5:22

    2. Authority of Christ He spoke with the authority of the Father

      Matthew 7:24-29

      He never said things like, “Maybe” or “I think…”

      or “My opinion”

    3. Sinlessness of Christ The complete absence of the consciousness or confession of sin in the words or deeds of Jesus. John 8:46, 1 Peter 2:22

    4. The testimony of the disciples and James, the brother of Jesus.

      John 1:1-3, John 20:28, Acts 2:33-36

    5. The resurrection Only someone who is divine can conquer death.

      Matthew 28

  2. THE “WORD” IS ANOTHER TITLE FOR JESUS John 1:1-3,14

    1. A word is an expression of a man's thoughts, the means by which

      he communicates or reveals himself.

    2. Jesus is the “Word” because He reveals God. Hebrews 1:1-3

    3. As the “Word”, Jesus is eternal and the co-creator of the universe, holding all things together. John 1:1,3,14; Hebrews 1:3

  3. SON OF MAN

    1. Jesus was fully man, yet He did not have a sinful nature. 1 Peter 2:22

    2. The incarnation is how God the Son (Jesus) became a man — through

      the virgin birth. Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:23, Luke 1:27-35

      • Purpose of the incarnation:

        1. Reveal God to men John 1:14

        2. Provide an example for living John 13:15

        3. Provide a sacrifice for sin Hebrews 10:1-12

        4. Destroy the works of the devil 1 John 3:8

        5. Enable Him to be a merciful and faithful High Priest

        Hebrews 5:5-6

      • Proofs of His humanity:

        1. He had a human body John 1:14, Galatians 4:4

        2. He had a human soul and spirit Matthew 26:38, Luke 23:46

          He was not 50/50 man and God. He was 100% man and 100% God!

        3. He had the characteristics of a human being:

          • He was hungry Matthew 4:2

          • He was tired John 4:6

          • He was thirsty John 19:28

          • He wept John 11:35


  4. FALSE VIEWS ABOUT THE NATURE OF CHRIST:

    1. He was God's highest created representative (Jehovah’s Witnesses,

      Unitarians).

    2. He only appeared to be human but was not really a human being

      (Docetists).

    3. He was adopted as divine at his baptism (Adoptionism, Dynamic Monarchianism).


  5. ORTHODOX VIEW OF THE NATURE OF CHRIST:

    1. Fully God and fully man.

    2. Two natures were united in one person without forming a third

      nature. The true view!

    3. Jesus was without sin. He was impeccable.


  6. THE OFFICES OF CHRIST, THE ANOINTED ONE Isaiah 6:1, 11:1-3

    1. Prophet Matthew 13:57

      • A prophet is one used by God to reveal and deliver His message to man.

      • Jesus showed the way of escape from sin's guilt for both

        nation and individual.

        Jesus represents God to man.

      • Jesus pointed out sin, proclaimed righteousness, and commanded obedience to the Word of God.

    2. Priest Hebrews 5:1-10

      • A priest is divinely consecrated to represent man before God and to offer sacrifices on behalf of man. Hebrews 8:3

      • Jesus offered Himself, the sacrifice, at Calvary to secure

        the pardon of sin for man.

      • Jesus ever lives to intercede for man. Hebrews 7:25

    3. King 1 Timothy 6:15

      • A king rules over a kingdom and possesses supreme authority.

        Many reject His rulership, BUT one day- EVERY knee will bow and EVERY tongue confess He is Lord!!

      • His kingship is not of this world and not established by human force. Philippians 2:9-11


  7. JESUS CHRIST, THE LAMB OF GOD

    1. Jesus — a picture painted throughout the Old Testament.

      • Christ our Passover. 1 Corinthians 5:7

        1. Passover in the Old Testament is a type of the sacrifice of Christ.

        2. Jesus our sacrifice. John 10:11

      • A prophetic picture. Exodus 11:112:51

        1. Death is a divine judgment of sin. Exodus 11:5

        2. The Passover lamb as substitute for us, for our sins, and for the ungodly. Exodus 12:3, John 1:29,

          Galatians 1:4, Titus 2:14, Romans 5:6

        3. God was made manifest to set the Israelites free.

          • Jesus was made manifest to set us free from sin.

            1 John 3:5

          • Jesus was made manifest to destroy the works of

            the devil. 1 John 3:8

        4. Singled out a lamb for sacrifice. Exodus 12:5

          • This lamb could have no blemish, no flaw, no mark of deformity.

            God only had one Lamb in mind, Jesus!

          • Jesus had no sin, no spot, no blemish, no fault in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21, 1 Peter 1:19, John 19:6, Hebrews 4:15

            v. Took of the lamb. Exodus 12:8-11

          • God was preparing them for a long journey.

          • Not one feeble or weak person among them. Psalm 105:37

          • Jesus provides the same. 1 Corinthians 11:23-34

  8. JESUS CHRIST, THE HEALER

    1. The Father does the works. John 14:8-10

      • If you want to see the Father, look at Jesus. Jesus revealed to men the express will of God in action. John 6:38

      • Jesus’ every move and every word were designed to destroy

        the works of Satan. Every work of power, and every healing,

        Jesus ONLY did was the will of God. 1 John 3:8

        Gods will!

    2. Jesus healed the multitude. Matthew 14:14

      • They came expecting to receive healing. Not even in a great multitude was there one person Jesus would not heal.

    3. Jesus healed every sickness and every disease. Matthew 9:35,

      12:15,15:30-31; Luke 6:17-19

    4. He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them. Luke 4:40

    5. He healed all who were oppressed. Acts 10:38

    6. There is only one account recorded where Jesus was hindered from accomplishing the will of God in their lives. Doubt robbed them of God’s blessing. Mark 6:5-6

      Jesus didn't just get up and leave them with nothing. Jesus went “round about the villages, teaching” (v.6). The Word changes unbelief into faith. Romans 10:17

    7. Healing power flowed through Jesus, healing everyone who came to Him in faith.

      • When Jesus went to sit at the right hand of God, He gave power to the His followers, and that power flowed through the early Church. Acts 5:16

      • It still flows through His Body today when we lay hands on the sick. Mark 16:18

      • “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever”

        Hebrews 13:8

    8. Isaiah 53:3-5

      • “Griefs” and “sorrows” have often been incorrectly

        translated in the King James translation of the Bible.

    9. Griefs. The Hebrew word “choli” means “sickness” or “disease.”

      ii. Sorrows. The Hebrew word “makobah” means “pains.”

      • “Borne” means “to lift up; to remove to a distance.”

        1. Sin and sickness have passed from me to Calvary.

        2. Salvation and health have passed from Calvary to me.

      • With His stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:5

  9. THE PRESENT AND FUTURE MINISTRY OF JESUS CHRIST

    1. Jesus is interceding for His people. Hebrews 7:25

    2. Preparing a place for our everlasting habitation. John 14:3

    3. Building the Church, which is His body. Matthew 16:18

    4. Indwelling and empowering every believer. Galatians 2:20

    5. Answering the prayers of His people. John 14:12-14

    6. In the future, He will come for His Church. 1 Thessalonians 4:13- 18

    7. In the future, He will reign over the new heaven and new earth. Revelation 21
